FunctionThe primary function of the LMA is to maintain a patent (open) airway and allow for positive pressure ventilation.
How it works: The device consists of an airway tube connected to a mask with an inflatable silicone cuff. The LMA is inserted blindly into the pharynx (throat) and advanced until it comes to rest at the hypopharynx. The cuff is then inflated, which creates a low-pressure seal around the opening of the larynx (the glottis).
Result: This seal allows oxygen and anesthetic gases to be delivered directly into the trachea and lungs, while also providing a clear channel for the patient to breathe spontaneously or for the practitioner to assist their breathing.
By Specific Design and Usage:
Classic/Reusable LMA: The original device, designed to be sterilized and reused multiple times.Single-Use LMA: A disposable version made of medical-grade PVC or silicone. This is the most common type used today to prevent cross-contamination.
LMA Flexible (or Reinforced): Features a flexible, wire-reinforced shaft that can be bent and positioned away from the surgical site without kinking or obstructing the airway. This is particularly useful for head, neck, and oral surgeries.
LMA Fastrach (Intubating LMA): A specialized device designed to aid in difficult intubations. It has a short, wide, metal shaft and a guiding handle. It is specifically shaped to allow a standard endotracheal tube to be passed blindly through it and into the trachea.LMA Unique: A single-use version of the classic LMA, made from PVC.
LMA ProSeal: A second-generation, reusable LMA with the gastric drain tube for a better seal and aspiration protection.LMA Supreme: A single-use, second-generation LMA with a gastric drain tube and a more rigid, pre-shaped design for easier insertion.
